A taste of Greece

Widely acknowledged as the cradle of civilisation, Greece is home to some of the world’s best historical sites and is the birthplace of mathematics, theatre and The Olympic Games. Look beyond all the ruins though, and you’ll find a nation of people who love to party.

Did you know...

The Greek custom of breaking plates originated at funerals. After the commemorative feast was served, the guests would smash their plates as a way of breaking curses and scaring away evil spirits.

For a nation with such a complex history, Greece has remarkably simple food. Drawing heavily on aromatic herbs and fresh vegetables, lemons, feta cheese and seafood, Greek dishes are amongst the healthiest in the world. The Mediterranean diet has actually been found to lower cholesterol due to the generous amounts of extra-virgin olive oil so it’s guilt-free and delicious.

Served warm rather than hot, Greek dishes are generally hearty, quick to prepare and bursting with flavour. Ingredients are bought fresh on the day or home-grown, with most backyards in rural areas boasting a lemon tree, an olive tree and a herb garden at the very least.

One of the easiest ways to add a bit of Greek flair to your entertaining is to make a meze plate. Why not arrange some dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), a couple of dips, grilled haloumi slices and pita bread on a platter for an easy starter?

The perfect finale to a Greek-inspired dinner party is a selection of pastries and sweets, such as baklava, halva and biscuits such as Kourabiedes. And don’t forget the Retsina and the Ouzo!
